Holiday Messages 2013: Mystery and Majesty - God with Us. 2 CD Series
The Christmas season often presents us with a confusing conflict of emotions—anger and joy, depression and solace.
And while the story of Jesus’s birth establishes so much of our joy and brings comfort to so many of our hurts, it carries with it questions as well. This two-message holiday series, Mystery and Majesty: God with Us
reminds us that despite our questions and struggles, God wants us to cling to Christ as we marvel at His mystery and His majesty.
1. Joseph ... Did You Know? Matthew 1:18–23
Young Mary, the mother of Jesus, knew so little about that little bundle of joy conceived by the Holy Spirit. She didn’t know those tiny feet would one day walk on water. As she put clean clothes on Him, she didn’t know the extent to which He’d offer redemption and cleansing to humanity. And she didn’t know that her lips kissed the tiny face of God Himself. But if Mary knew so little, how much less did Joseph know? Sometimes cast aside as a minor player in the retelling of the Christmas story, Joseph had a role that mirrored his wife’s in many ways. He sat with her, marveling about the coming baby. He wondered about the baby’s origin. And yet, Joseph was forced to make a choice that not even Mary had to make. While Mary carried the baby within her, Joseph had to choose to stay and involve himself in the baby’s life. Let’s examine Joseph’s risky choice and what it tells us about this significant figure in the Christmas story.
2. Jesus ... What a Gift! 2 Corinthians 9:15; Philippians 2:5–8
The qualities that babies bring into the world never get old. The soft, delicate skin. The beautiful calm of sleep. The tiny hands and feet so perfectly formed. When a baby comes into our lives, we parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, or sisters rejoice in the magnificence of God’s gift of life. But how much more did the family rejoice in wonderment when the child was Emmanuel, God with us? When God took on human flesh at the birth of Jesus, He brought a wonder to the world that had yet to be seen. Dramatic acts of judgment and rescue that we find recorded in the Old Testament did not compare to the union of humanity and deity in the child, Jesus. Let’s take a closer look at this awesome gift of God to the human race.
